IN BED WITH MY BROTHER will present PHILOSOPHY OF THE WORLD at Brighton Festival in May, as part of assembly 2026. We asked them to tell us a bit more about how the show came about.

Where did the idea or inspiration come from for PHILOSOPHY OF THE WORLD?

Initially a podcast and then a serious deep dive and rabbit hole obsession with The Shaggs over three years reading and watching and listening to and gobbling up everything we could find. During this research, we found so many parallels and spooky coincidences that linked our own lives with the lives of The Shaggs, it felt like we had to do it. Like it was our fate… As well as an interest in Valerie Solanas, Andy Warhol’s would-be assassin, who wrote a play Up Your Ass at the same time The Shaggs were playing their first gigs. She sort of took over the process, haunting us with another very different but spookily pertinent history and forced us to look at the story from another angle on patriarchy and agency in art.

How would you describe PHILOSOPHY OF THE WORLD in three words?

Riotous, loud, unpredictable, provocative, visceral, funny, tongue-in-cheek, anarchic, punk, silly, we’re bad at this sort of thing…

What do you hope people will take away from PHILOSOPHY OF THE WORLD?

We hope people won’t have thought at all about needing to go to the toilet, we hope they feel rattled and changed and shocked and perplexed and ecstatic and angry and excited and prodded and provoked and like they either wanna go out partying or they wanna go home and do deeper dive into The Shaggs and spend all night on Youtube listening to My Pal Foot Foot.

Why are you're looking forward to performing as part of the caravan assembly at Brighton Festival 2026?

We took part in the assembly in 2024 as a pitching company and had a lush time! It was amazing to spend the weekend with so many interesting artists and delegates, we had wild and wonderful conversations over breakfasts, beers, delicious dinners and post-show socials. It was a super inspiring time and a brilliant way to network in a non-intimidating environment.

We made great connections and had a really fun experience so we look forward to more of the same and soaking up the creative atmosphere and having cool conversations about art. And sharing our work and seeing the brilliant work that’s part of the assembly and the wider festival!

And of course, we’re looking forward to being in gorgy Brighton and having a jolly on the pier. We're gunna bring plenty of pound coins for the slots. And maybe go on the ghost train. And have a chippy tea.

It will be so dreamy to present the work at Brighton Festival, it’s always a really fab, varied programme. An honour to be a part of it. Looking forward to seeing lots and having a laugh and making some cool new friends.
